“Don’t stare up the steps, step up the stairs.”
Most people read this and think: Don’t waste time just looking at the problem. Don’t hesitate — act, move, climb.
And yes, that’s true to an extent. But when I hear this quote, I feel it’s not just about “avoiding the stare.” It’s also about what that stare can mean.
To me, staring isn’t always a sign of wasting time. Sometimes it’s a moment of reflection. It’s strategy. It’s the analysis you do before making a choice. It's the courage you gather before you take a big step — whether small or life-changing.
And the steps themselves symbolize experience. Each step forward, whether it comes with a win or a setback, teaches us something and prepares us for the next.
“When a lion takes two steps back, it doesn’t mean he is scared. It means he’s preparing for a bigger and deadlier jump.”
In the same way, if you see someone pausing or staring, it doesn’t always mean they’re idle. It might also not mean that they are afraid, They might be gathering courage, evaluating options, or looking for a smarter way to reach their goal.
That’s where smart work often makes a bigger difference than just blind hard work.
Beyond the stare
But here’s the real deal: reflection and strategy are only half the job. At some point, you need to act.
You have to:
Prepare your mindset → mentally commit to the journey.
Channel your energy → direct your focus where it matters.
Take the first step → however small, it sets things in motion.
Keep climbing with determination → because the higher you go, the tougher it gets, but the more rewarding it feels.
So yes! Staring has its place, its own importance, but climbing is what takes you forward.
Life isn’t about endlessly staring at the staircase, nor is it about rushing up without thought. It’s about balance, reflect enough to know your path, then step forward with courage and consistency.
So the next time you find yourself hesitating, remember:
Pausing doesn’t make you weak. What matters is taking the next step when it counts.
Because in the end, progress always comes — one step at a time.
